What is the ruling on men wearing silver?
It is well known to Muslims that wearing gold is forbidden for men, while wearing silver is permissible for them, as well as other metals. However, this information is incomplete, meaning that the question is what is the ruling on men wearing silver? He has two answers, one of which is agreed upon by religious scholars, and the other for which there is disagreement, and there is more than one opinion.
The sayings of scholars about the ruling on men wearing silver
As we have already indicated in the previous paragraph, the sayings of scholars regarding the ruling on men’s wearing of silver have been agreed upon in the ruling regarding the wearing of a silver ring. While the difference between them came with regard to other ornaments, and what is meant here is what is worn on the neck of the various necklaces or on the wrist of the watches and what are called these days Al-Hazazat and the like of the jewelry that are made of silver.
- Wearing a silver ring: The majority of scholars are agreed that it is permissible for men to wear rings made of silver. Especially since it has been proven on the authority of the Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – that he wore a ring made of silver and the Companions – may God be pleased with them all – followed him in that.
- Wearing different jewelry made of silver: There was a difference of opinion among religious scholars on the ruling on men wearing silver without a ring or decorating the sword cap with silver, as was customary among the Companions, such as chains, bracelets, watches and earrings, and this dispute was divided into two opinions.
♦ The first saying: It is the opinion of the majority of scholars, who said that it is not permissible for men to wear jewelry made of silver, because it imitates women, and this is forbidden in our Islamic law. However, there is a slight difference between those who said this opinion, some of them forbade wearing jewelry made of silver definitively, such as the Malikis and the opinion of the Hanbalis, and some of them disapproved of it, as the opinion of the owners of the Hanbali school said, and some went to prevent it.
However, he did not deprive him or hate him. While the Hanafi school of thought said that it is permissible for men to wear what is made of silver. As long as it is not one of the jewelry known to belong to women, and these people relied on what was mentioned in the honorable Sunnah of the prohibition of men imitating women and vice versa, and men wearing jewelry known to belong to women even if they are made of metals other than gold, whether it is of silver or platinum or other metals.
On the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas – may God be pleased with them both – he said: The Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – said: “God cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women.”
♦ The second opinion: This opinion stated that due to the absence of an explicit text, whether it is in the Noble Qur’an or the honorable Sunnah of the Prophet, regarding the prohibition of silver, whether the ring is fixed on the authority of the Prophet – upon him be the best prayer and the most long-term delivery – that he wore it or even other jewelry, which was mentioned It forbids ornaments made of gold and silverware. However, this opinion is weak and only a few scholars said it, including one from the Shafi’is. However, they stipulated that his intention should not be to adorn himself and imitate women, and based their opinion on this on some Qur’anic texts that say:
(Vma us unless proper taklva worth remembering Allah Stand crop sanctuary us think Ma Ma device aztrrtm lyh Van multi lyzlvn bahvayhm was your Lord knows that without knowledge balmtdyn). [الأنعام: 119].
(Permanent sanctuary lavish de mud khrj God lbadh valtybat de alrzq this llzyn Believers Say no khalsh accused CNN world nfsl Explain lqvm But I kzlk). [الأعراف 32].
Ruling on wearing silver for men, Ibn Uthaymeen
The ruling on wearing silver for men, Ibn Uthaymeen, did not differ from the opinion of the majority of scholars and the four imams, which is the permissibility of wearing a silver ring, as it was reported and proven from Noor al-Huda – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him -. While it is not. It is forbidden, and Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen – may God have mercy on him – justified that what is below that of necklaces and what is worn on the wrist or ears, all of them are well-known jewelry that belong to women. That is, if any of the men wear it. He will be imitating them even if these ornaments are made of other than gold.
The Sheikh – may God have mercy on him – had said this opinion when he was asked about the ruling on men wearing necklaces made of gold, his answer was prohibition, and all the jewelry that women wear, even if they are made of metals other than gold, were attached to his answer.
On the authority of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali bin Abi Talib, he said: “The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, took silk and put it in his right hand, and took gold and put it in his left hand, then said: These two are forbidden to the males of my nation.”
Ruling on wearing a silver ring for men from the Sunnah
The ruling on wearing silver rings for men came unanimously among religious scholars, and there is no disagreement between them in that, and the reason for that? There is an explicit text in the honorable Sunnah of the Prophet, explaining that the Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – wore a silver ring and his companions followed him – may God be pleased with them all -. That is, it is permissible to wear a silver ring for men, as stated in the noble Prophetic hadiths.
On the authority of Anas bin Malik – may God be pleased with him – he said: “The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, had his ring of silver, and his part was of it.”
On the authority of Anas – may God be pleased with him – he said: “When the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, wanted to write to the Romans, he was told that they would not read a book unless it was sealed. He took a silver ring. It is as if I look at its white in his hand, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God inscribed on it.”
Although it is permissible to wear a silver ring for men. However, when wearing it, he must take into account some of the conditions without which a ring made of silver becomes the same as other jewelry.
- The first view: It is permissible for men to wear a ring made of gold and silver together, in the event that the gold is less than silver and is within the silver and is not apparent, or that it is only a color and does not appear separate from the silver in the case of the melting of this ring.
- The second opinion: It is makrooh to wear a ring made of gold and silver. As long as there is gold in it, even if it is a little or even silver, and this is what the Malikis say.
Ruling on wearing a silver ring according to the four schools of thought
The ruling on wearing a silver ring according to the four madhhabs does not differ from the opinions of all scholars! Because as we have already mentioned, wearing a silver ring for men is permissible and there is no dispute, because the most honorable of all creation, our master Muhammad – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family and all his companions – is to wear it. However, there is a slight disagreement between them on this issue, and whether it is permissible to wear a silver ring for men, whether it is completely permissible or restricted? Is it permissible only or is it desirable to wear it?
- The Malikis say: The owners of this madhhab said that it is permissible to wear a silver ring for men, provided that its weight does not exceed the value of two dirhams according to Sharia law, and that it is not intended to adorn and show off like women. Rather, following the example of the Noble Prophet – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – and other than that, stamping with silver for men becomes forbidden, as is the case with other jewelry.
- The Hanafis say: The followers of the Hanafi school are of the opinion that the Sunnah dictates the wearing of a silver ring. For those who have authority, such as the judge and the ruler. While it is better to leave this year as long as a person does not need it and is not in authority, and they relied, in their opinion, on the fact that the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – did not wear a silver ring at all. Rather, he wore it to address the kings in his prophetic call, as stated in the hadith of Anas bin Malik – may God be pleased with him -.
- The opinion of the Hanbalis: The owners of this madhhab said that wearing a silver ring for men is permissible according to Sharia without conditions. However, it is not recommended, meaning that a man who is stamped with silver is permissible for him, but it is not a condition or desirable to follow this Sunnah.
- The Shaafa’is say: It is permissible for a man to wear a silver ring without any conditions, whether it has authority or not, and whether it weighs heavy or light, as long as it is made of silver and not gold.
Ruling on wearing silver chains for men
Although there are some opinions that differ from the unanimous opinion regarding the ruling on wearing silver chains for men. However, the opinion of the public, with the consensus of the four imams, is that wearing chains is forbidden for men, even if they are made of silver or metals other than gold! Because it is known that chains are among the ornaments that are specific to women, and men wearing them is considered to be an imitation of them, and accordingly it is forbidden by Sharia even if there is no explicit text in them from the Noble Qur’an and the honorable Sunnah of the Prophet, as it came in the honorable hadith:
On the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas – may God be pleased with them both – he said: The Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – said: “God cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women.”
Ruling on wearing a silver watch for men
There is a difference of opinion among the scholars regarding the ruling on wearing a silver watch for men, and this disagreement is divided into two opinions:
Therefore, the scholars say, that it is better not to wear a silver watch in order to avoid committing a sin, especially in light of the disagreement among scholars regarding the ruling on wearing a silver watch for men.
Ruling on wearing silver for women
The ruling on women wearing silver differs from the ruling on men’s wearing of silver. Because the basis for the prohibition of gold and silver jewelry without the ring and the cap of the sword, is that men should not imitate women, and accordingly it is permissible for women to wear silver. Especially that adorning yourself with different metals, whether it is gold or silver, are all matters that pertain to women and are permissible for them rather than men. However, it is necessary to beware of being extravagant in adornment, which may lead to sedition and make women fall into taboos.
On the authority of Zaid bin Arqam – may God be pleased with him – the Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – said: “Silk and gold are permissible for the females of my nation and forbidden for the males.”
Ruling on men wearing gold from the Sunnah
Although the Noble Qur’an did not contain any of the rulings regarding wearing jewelry for women and men. However, we have come to know the ruling on men wearing gold from the honorable Sunnah of the Prophet, as well as the ruling on wearing silver from rings, chains and others. So we find that the Sunnah of the Prophet came full of a number of hadiths in which it was forbidden to wear gold for men, and the ruling in this matter does not differ from wearing a ring from wearing a chain, because all gold is forbidden for men.
On the authority of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali bin Abi Talib, he said: “The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, took silk and put it in his right hand, and took gold and put it in his left hand, then said: These two are forbidden to the males of my nation.”
On the authority of Al-Bara bin Azib – may God be pleased with him – he said: “The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, forbade us from seven: He forbade us from the gold ring – or he said: the gold ring – and from silk, alastbraq, brocade, red mithra, al-Qasi, and silver vessels. He commanded us to do seven things: to visit the sick, to follow funerals, to gloat a sneezer, to return the greeting of peace, to respond to the caller, to honor the one who is divided, and to support the oppressed.”
On the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas – may God be pleased with him – he said: The Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – saw a gold ring on the hand of a man, so he took it off and threw it, and said: (One of you baptizes into a coal of fire and puts it in his hand). It was said to the man after the Messenger of God – may God bless him and grant him peace – had gone: Take your ring and benefit from it.
On the authority of Abdullah bin Amr – may God be pleased with him – he said: The Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – said: “Whoever dies of my nation while drinking wine; God has forbidden him to drink it in Paradise, and whoever dies from my nation wearing gold; May God forbid his clothing in Heaven.”
The wisdom behind the prohibition of wearing jewelry for men
The scholars explained the wisdom behind the prohibition of wearing jewelry for men, that the basis for wearing jewelry made of different metals such as gold or silver is to beautify women and adorn themselves in order to request marriage, or that she adorn herself for her man until he increases his desire for her and becomes attached to her. Marriage and childbearing, as the Messenger of God – may God bless him and grant him peace – commanded us.
While a man does not need to adorn himself or to be complemented by someone else like a woman, rather God – Glory be to Him and Almighty – has blessed him with perfection in his manhood, and he is the one who asks a woman to marry and not the other way around. For this reason, Islamic law permitted jewelry of gold, silver and other items for women and prohibited them for men.
On the authority of Zaid bin Arqam – may God be pleased with him – the Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – said: “Silk and gold are permissible for the females of my nation and forbidden for the males.”
