The legal ruqyah is the invocation with which a Muslim ascends a affliction, such as fever, epilepsy, and other pests, and it is the supplication with which to pray for a request for healing. And that is by taking the causes, which are prevention, medication and recourse to God. It was reported on the authority of Osama bin Shareek that he said: “The Bedouins said: O Messenger of God, do we not seek medical treatment?” He said: “Yes, O servants of God, seek treatment, for God does not create a disease without appointing a remedy for it, except as a cure.” They said: O Messenger of God, what is it? He said: The pyramid.[1] And the Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him – used to heal himself with the legal ruqyah, and he commanded the Muslims who were able to perform ruqyah for his Muslim brother to do, and Muslims are in need today for ruqyah. Anxiety, disorder, insomnia, or depression spreads, and when magic abounds and the effect of the eye is nullified, the legal ruqyah is by reciting the verses of God on the patient, on oneself, on children or others, or reading legitimate supplications about the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him.[2]

Ruling on ruqyah and conditions for its validity
Islam legislated and permitted ruqyah for Muslims, as it is a treatment for diseases and a prevention from them through the Holy Qur’an and the wise remembrance. Ruqya is upon me, there is no harm in ruqyah as long as there is no shirk in it.”[24] The legal ruqyah has been made terms and conditions so that it is permissible and beneficial, and that it is far from charlatan, superstition and heresy, and its conditions are:[25]
- Faith, certainty, and certainty that the healer is God alone and has no partner, and the ruqyah is a reason to be taken, and it is not permissible for the one who prays to ask for healing from anyone other than God, such as asking angels, jinn or the righteous for his ruqyah, for this is polytheism with God.
- The legal ruqyah should be in the Arabic language in understandable terms, away from the terms of sorcery and charlatanism.
- The ruqyah should be based on the Holy Qur’an and remembrance, and the ruqyah should recite it directly to the patient, or recite it over water and drink from it, or over food.
- That there should not be in the ruqyah anything that is forbidden or offensive, such as cursing and insulting for illness and others.
- That the ruqyah be from a Muslim who believes in God, and not from an infidel or a magician, for a Muslim does not perform ruqyah for an unbeliever, and it is permissible for a Muslim to perform ruqyah for an unbeliever.
